Vintage 1940s U.S. Made Green Bakelite
Absolutely gorgeous, American made Bakelite from the 1940s!
This beautiful vintage material features an incredible green mottled pattern, with brilliant green figuring against a deep, dark green/black background. The contrast is absolutely STRIKING, and makes for some truly spectacular knife scales!
For those unfamiliar, Bakelite and Catalin are both made from phenol formaldehyde resin, the same family of resin used in the paper, linen, and canvas Micartas we all know and love.
The main difference is that Bakelite typically contains fillers, such as wood flour, for additional strength, while Catalin contains no fillers at all. The vast majority of Bakelite is brown or black, while Catalin was produced in a wide variety of vibrant colors. Much of the material referred to as Bakelite by makers these days is actually Catalin, which tends to be more valuable.
Both Bakelite and Catalin develop a beautiful natural patina as they age, just like vintage Micarta. These old phenolic resins also take an absolutely INCREDIBLE polish! The beautiful depth, rich coloration, and glasslike finish are some of the things that make vintage Bakelite and Catalin so desirable.
Slabs measure approximately 6.5" x 1.6" x .12" and are sold individually.
